A NEW Collection of Work

Exploring themes of identity and self-worth: the lies we tell ourselves, and how we can know our true value.

Identity is a complicated thing in our society. We define our sense of self through so many things: our careers, our relationships, our roles of leadership; even the ways we choose to eat, dress, the types of media we consume, and the content we present on the internet.

These types of labels make it easier to wrap up that question of “Who are you?” into a neat little box: I am an artist. I am a wife. I am a mother. I am kind, I am nerdy, I am goofy, and emo was never a phase, Mom!

But what happens when one of those pillars of your identity changes? A relationship ends. A career path is altered. What happens if you’re told that something about your identity is not only wrong, but shameful? This can leave us lost and reeling, and makes room for all sorts of lies to creep in.

Off and on for the past two years, I’ve been working on a new collection of paintings. It’s a visual exploration of the lies I believed about my identity in my late teens and early 20s: lies that I was someone useless, broken, and unlovable. Each painting tackles one of those different lies, and uses the words of scriptures to shine a light on their falseness

I have BIG news about this collection that I can’t share quite yet.

But what I CAN share, are a couple of the paintings.

We all struggle with lies about our inadequacies. Our brains can be very good at sneaking in little reasons about why we’re horrible, hideous, and should basically go eat worms. I hope this collection inspires discussion about our true value. That each and every one of us is someone precious, valuable, and loved.

I'm really excited to share what's coming next for this body of work! I hope you stay tuned.

In the mean time, prints of the first three pieces are available in my online shop, if you'd like to check them out!
